Three Oaks

Three Oaks is a large and popular inn about a half days walk or so outside a major city. The inn itself is actually situated in and between three extremely large oaks trees. It is owned and run by a beautiful half-elven women named Elwen. It is said that a powerful Druid made it for the own out of hope of swaying her love. He was unsuccessful, but his powers made a very beautiful and unusual inn. The trees still grows, it still blooms during the spring and summer. It sits on a large lake that gives it all the water it needs. The soil has been magically enhanced to gives it the entire nutrients it needs. The magic the druid used has never been duplicated since.

The door to the inn leads into the heart of one of the trees. The inn has several levels and can accommodate 30 to 40 over night guests. The inn is both in and of the trees themselves. While some of the walls seem cut out of the trees others are man made walls. The inside of the inn has board walls and wood floors, just like other inns, although others are out of the trees themselves. From the inside you can see the beauty of the tress. All the rooms in the inn were built to be part of the trees and not to make the trees be part of the inn.

The layout of the inn itself is left to the GM. Three Oaks is a three story inn and any drawing will work for it. There are drawing for inns in the existing Fantasy Hero material. You can also find drawings of inns in existing material from other game publishers. The 2nd and 3rd floors can be exact copies of each other, just add stairs up

There are a couple things to note though. Three Oaks does sit next to a large lake and has a dock on it. It also has a covered patio outside on the first floor. It also has a balcony on the second floor were customers can sit and enjoy their meals. The third floor of the inn doesn't have a balconey, but stairs lead up to it from the second floor balconey. Service girls will come out and take orders from those sitting on the balcony.

It also has a door in the back of the inn that will teleport those going through it to another inn called The Hobbit Hole(see Places for more details). The Hobbit Hole also has a door that will bring people back to the Three Oaks. The owners of both inns are freinds and tend to help each other out in a time of need. Like running out of wine or meat and such.

The water of the lake the inn sits on is home to numerous fish and birds. It is a very deep lake; rumors say that it leads to an underground river that ends in the sea. It is know that elfs who make there home in the sea have been seen in its waters. The lake has the magical ability to allow creatures who need dwell in salt water the ability to survive in it.

It is also known to have 2 different gates into Undermountain.

The first is deep in the center of the lake; the other is under the docks of the inn its self. No one will talk much about the gates, but some facts are known. The gate in the center doesn’t always lead to the exact same point. It seems to have several spots that it will take those who enter it. It can be seen at night as a yellowish glow deep in the lake.

The gate under the docks is quite different it is strictly an arrival point only. Several adventurers have entire pool and rivers in Undermountain, only to be brought here. It seems that there is more than one gate in Undermountain that uses this gate as an arrivial point.

Campaign Uses: Three Oaks is a good starting point for adventures. Beside the gates to Undermountain (see Undermountain for more details), numerous powerful NPC like to visit Three Oaks. It’s far enough away from cities that they can get away from the business of the city for a bit.

Gms can easily adapt it to be in a wood elf city or even on the outskirts of a city. This gives plays a known place to work out of and the GM an easy way of having an employer find them.
